James' solo musical projects  Just messing around in my studio. A mix of songs I did with my girl when she was young and improvising.
Todd Rundgren Yes, I spent long nights listening to Todd Rundgren's "A Wizard, A True Star" with headphones. In fact, I have most of his stuff from the 70's and 80's. Todd's a big influence - writing from personal experience and experimenting with multimedia. For me, he was also a gateway to other things like...
Chalkhills Perhaps the best XTC site. I've been a fan since junior high school - 82. By then, they had already released 4 CD's ranging in style and production from punky sci-fi pop to noise poems to lush celtic ballads. They now have more than a dozen CD's out. They've influenced nearly everyone. Andy Partridge, the group's principle songwriter, is ALSO a painter.
Chalkhills recommends A list of lesser known XTC influenced groups and solo artists. We're particularly fond of Martin Newell and Jon Brion.
Neil Finn Neil and Tim Finn are two of my favorite songwriters and have been since first hearing Split Enz' "I Got You". This is Neil's site - pretty nifty. If you haven't guessed, he and Tim are also painters.
Matmos San Francisco group. Live performances are a collage of improvised found sounds, sample collages and projected images. They collaborated with Bjork on Vespertine.
Ken Butler Ken Butler - musician, artist, inventor with a unique vision. He designs and builds all of his instruments from junk. Then he manages to play beautiful music on these sculptures. He was featured on EMI (experimental musical instruments) 1998 compilation CD "Gravikords, Whirlies and Pyrophones." You may have seen him in little short films between videos on MTV 2.
Flaming Lips The "Soft Bulletin" was amazing. We saw them twice on that tour. A near perfect multimedia blend of summer-flavored optimism. The album "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" is great too.
Tom Waits I couldn't sleep at night without including Tom here. He understands the visual aspects of musical production better than anyone.
